2020 AACTA Award nominations are announced with ABC dominating the nominees

They are Australia’s answer to the Golden Globes,

And on Thursday, the 2020 Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards (AACTAs) were announced – with a few stunning surprises.

In the television category, ABC’s six-part series, Stateless leads the field with an astounding 18 nominations.

And the winner is… Cate Blanchett’s ABC six-part series Stateless has received a whopping 18 AACTA Award nominations 

These include Best Telefeature or Mini Series, Best Guest or Supporting Actress for Cate Blancett, and Best Direction in a Television Drama or Comedy for Emma and Freeman and Jocelyn Moorhouse.

It is followed closely by the network’s Indigenous drama Mystery Road, which has been nominated for 14 awards. 

Six shows are nominated in the Best Drama Series category, including: Bloom, Doctor Doctor, Halifax: Retribution, The Heights, Mystery Road and Wentworth.

The nominees for Best Entertainment Program include the hugely popular Lego Masters Australia, The Voice, Have You Been Paying Attention, Hard Quiz, The Weekly, and Eurovision – Australia Decides. 

Rounding up the Best Factual Entertainment category are Gogglebox Australia, Hamish & Andy’s “Perfect” Holiday, Love On The Spectrum, The Project, Who Do You Think You Are? and You Can’t Ask That. 

In the feature film category, coming-of-age film Babyteeth leads the race with 12 nominations, closely followed by True History of the Kelly Gang with 10 nods. I Am Woman earned seven.

The nominations for Best Lead Actor include: George MacKay (True history of the Kelly Gang), Sam Neill (Rams), Richard Roxburgh (H is for Happiness), Toby Wallace (Babyteeth), and Hugo Weaving (Measure for Measure).  

The nods for Best Lead Actress include: Tilda Cobham-Hervey (I Am Woman), Laura Gordon (Undertow), Elizabeth Moss (The Invisible Man), Lupita Nyong’o (Little Monsters) and Eliza Scanlen (Babyteeth). 

The gents in the running for Best Supporting Actor are Fayssal Bazzi (Measure for Measure), Russell Crowe (True History of the Kelly Gang), Aaron Jeffery (The Flood), Ben Mendelsohn (Babyteeth) and Wesley Patten (H is for Happiness).

Emma Booth (H is for Happiness), Essie Davis (Babyteeth), Bella Heathcote (Relic), Deborah Mailman (H is for Happiness) and Doris Younane (Measure for Measure) round out the Best Supporting Actress nods. 

And, expect all eyes to be on Rebel Wilson as she receives her first AACTA nomination for the Best Subscription Television Presenter for her Amazon Prime’s ensemble comedy series LOL: Last One Laughing Australia. 

The ceremony will take place on November 30, and free online festival ScreenFest will run the entire week, connecting the film industry with fans.
