Two drunk mothers were arrested for neglect – after taking their four children late night swimming in the cold sea.

Rescuers were called to the beauty spot beach near Swansea after a Tesco delivery driver raised the alarm after he heard someone ‘in distress in the sea’.

By the time the police and coastguards arrived at Caswell Bay, on Tuesday night they found four youngsters and the two women back on the sand.

The children were given blankets to warm up following the incident around 8.50pm.

A 34-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of being drunk in charge of a vehicle and child neglect, and a 33-year-old was held on suspicion of child neglect.

Mumbles Coastguard tweeted: ‘Caswell Bay, pitch darkness, high tide, blowing a force four is not the place for your children’s swimming lessons.’

The mothers were still believed to be in police custody on Wednesday.

An RNLI lifeboat and coastguard helicopter were stood down as they made their way to the scene.

Tesco said its delivery driver alerted the emergency services after ‘he heard someone in distress in the sea’ and ‘stayed at the site until help arrived’.
