South Australia’s famous ‘pink’ Lake MacDonnell

The famous ‘pink’ Lake MacDonnell, home to Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, is located 1.5 hour flight and a 45 minute drive from Adelaide.

The beautiful bubblegum lakes, which have become a popular attraction for tourists, are the result of the water’s high salinity levels, combined with the presence of salt-loving algae and pink bacteria known as halobacteria – turning the water bright pink.

When there is less water in the lake, the salt is more concentrated and therefore the colour appears brighter.
