Gina Rodriguez makes Easter Egg movie-within-a-show cameo in the Netflix teen rom com series Dash & Lily

Gina Rodriguez makes a movie-within-a-show cameo in the season one finale of Netflix‘ new sitcom Dash & Lily.

Throughout the season the characters discuss a fake Pixar film called Collation, and it is mentioned one of the characters is voiced by Gina, 36.

The finale contains a big reveal where a bit of Collation is finally seen – and the show’s executive producer told TV Line that Gina herself lent her voice to the scene.

On Dash & Lily, Gina is said to be playing a talking highlighter in Collation, which is a love story between a bit of paper and a stapler.

Midori Francis stars on the Netflix show as 17-year-old Lily who is looking for romance and loves Gina’s signature Collation line: ‘Go for it!’

Meanwhile Austin Abrams plays a humbug teen who gets close to Lily in a typical quirky rom com dynamic where they carry out each other’s whimsical dares.

After a season interspersed with advertisements for the fake movie Dash sees the part of Collation where the highlighter says: ‘Go for it!’

Executive producer Joe Tracz said: ‘Brad Silberling, one of our producers who also directed the first two episodes, was also a producer and director on Jane the Virgin,’ the show that made Gina a star.

‘So he was like: “You know, I think I could get Gina to do it.” He reached out her, she was like: “Totally!” and she recorded a bunch of different takes of the line. It was so much fun to actually get to pay off one of these writers’ room jokes that we had.’

Brad Silberling may also be remembered as the director of the film Lemony Snicket’s A Series Of Unfortunate Events starring Jim Carrey as the villainous Count Olaf.

Gina is not the only star to add a bit of luster to the cast of the Christmas-themed series as Nick Jonas also appears on the program playing himself.

He also unites with his brothers Joe and Kevin Jonas, with whom he rose to fame in a boy band, to perform their song Like It’s Christmas from last year.

Released on Netflix this Wednesday, the show is based on Rachel Cohn and David Levithan’s young adult novel Dash And Lily’s Book Of Dares.
