‘There was an understanding of not being accepted for who you are’: Kylie Minogue shares theory on why she was embraced by the gay community and became a Mardi Gras icon

Kylie Minogue has revealed she has a ‘theory’ as to why she has been embraced by the gay community.

Speaking to The Australian this week, the 52-year-old, who has performed at the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras multiple times, said she felt that perhaps she was viewed as an outsider.

‘Part of it is the music, part of it may have been a theory I explored, that I wasn’t wasn’t always given the easiest of times back then,’ she told the paper.

‘And I wonder if part of that coming together was an understanding of not being accepted for who you are’.

The pop star, who says she ‘treasures’ her gay following, went on to say that she felt vilified by the media while being embraced by her fans.

‘At the time the press were really harsh on me, it didn’t seem like the public were, but the press were.

‘It was sometimes just not nice, borderline a bit cruel and just not necessary,’ she said.

Kylie added that she was slammed for making the move from Neighbours to music, and was told, ‘you’re an actress and not a singer’.

She continued: ‘Maybe there was just a knowing, just a sense, that maybe we like each other.’
