Police mocked over e-fits of Grimsby raid suspects with FACE MASKS

An under fire police force has been mocked after it issued e-fits of suspects who broke into a house wearing face masks.

Humberside Police were ridiculed online for the appeal to trace two burglars which came after it was slammed for arresting a retired nurse who removed her dementia hit mother from a care home.

Ylenia Angeli, whose daughter is former Coronation Street actress Leandra Ashton, 42, was detained for trying to remove Tina Thornborough, 97, who she had not hugged for nine months due to Covid.

In its appeal, Humberside Police said two burglars entered a property in Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire, and assaulted the home owner at the end of October.

The e-fits of the burglars showed them wearing the face-masks and black gloves broke into the Grimsby property at around 10am on October 23.

They assaulted a man inside the home and stole his phone and money in what is being described as a ‘targeted attack’. The attackers were both of heavy build, and one was wearing a hi-viz vest. The other a black jacket with a black flat cap.

One of the suspects was described as wearing distinctive black framed glasses with an accent that is not local to the area.

A Humberside Police spokesman said: ‘We would like to reassure the public that we believe this to be a targeted attack with no wider risk to the community.’

The e-fits of the burglars wearing masks were mocked on social media as soon as they were released.

Ellen Cottis wrote: ‘The new e-fit. At least in some aspects they were sticking to covid regulations but a shame they could not stick to the law.

‘Sorry for laughing at the pictures but when I saw the face masks could not help it. I hope the victims of the burglary soon recover from their ordeal as it is not nice.’

Scott Krebs said: ‘Funniest thing I’ve seen all week on the internet! Is this a parody account of our most efficient local constabulary?’

Redka Alice added: ‘At least they were wearing the masks!’

Ms Angeli and her daughter, former Coronation Street actress Leandra Ashton, 42, were horrified to see the condition of Tina Thornborough, 97, when they attended Northgate Care Home, Market Weighton, East Yorks, on Tuesday.

Mrs Angeli pushed past a member of staff whilst still holding a bunch of roses she had brought for the visit and wheeled her mum outside.

To her horror Humberside Police were called to the scene by the care home and she was arrested on suspicion of assault, before later being de-arrested by police.

After her arrest on Tuesday, Angeli yesterday told MailOnline: ‘I was shocked and wondering “how has it come to this?”

‘To prevent me from leaving with my own mother, who I wanted to give the loving care of her daughter, which she so needed, they handcuffed me.

‘It was hard to believe that at the age of 73 I was sitting in handcuffs in the back of a police car, but I didn’t have time to consider my own position very much.

‘I was more concerned about Leandra who was understandably extremely distressed and my mum who was in the midst of all this chaos and confusion.

‘I felt helpless and just had to remain calm for their sake but it was degrading to find myself in that situation, I was no threat to anyone, it was so unnecessary to detain me that way, I was not a criminal.’

Speaking of the moment the police arrived, she said: ‘I had Mum in the car with me and was sitting with the engine running to keep us both warm.

‘The police officer came over and took the keys from my car which shocked me and made me angry. He had already blocked my car in and said he was going to arrest me.

‘I don’t think even at that point I believed it but he was very strict and no nonsense and suddenly I was in handcuffs.

‘They were doing their job, I recognise that, but it was so sad that it came to that.’

In distressing footage posted online, Mrs Angeli can be seen being handcuffed and detained in the back of a police car in Market Weighton, East Yorkshire, while her frail mother looks on.

Humberside Police later said they had been responding to reports of an assault and Mrs Angeli was subsequently de-arrested and allowed home.

Mrs Thornborough was later returned to the care home.
