Hipgnosis has snapped up the rights to a huge collection of songs including hits by Mariah Carey and Fleetwood Mac.

The £251m deal with Kobalt Music Copyrights will see the music investment fund acquire 42 catalogues spanning 33,000 songs.

Hipgnosis’s total music library contains 57,000 songs. Merck Mercuriadis, the company’s founder and boss, said the music owned by Kobalt was ‘a wonderful portfolio of proven songs’.

He added: ‘These special songs that have had such extraordinary success have a lot more joy to bring the world.’

Hipgnosis was founded by 57-year-old Mercuriadis and listed on the London Stock Exchange in 2018, and since then has raised more than £625million from the markets.

Mercuriadis previously managed the likes of Elton John, Morrissey and Beyoncé.
