Why some of SAS Australia’s fittest recruits seem to be having the hardest time

SAS Australia instructors explain why some of the show’s fittest recruits are having the hardest time with the challenges… as they single out Nick Cummins and Ali Oetjen

There’s a reason why some of the fittest celebrities on SAS Australia are struggling the most, according to the show’s DS (directing staff).

A particularly punishing challenge during Monday’s episode involved the recruits repeatedly submerging themselves in freezing cold water.

Later reflecting on the challenge, the DS couldn’t help but notice that some of the leanest celebrities had struggled with the frigid conditions.

They singled out both Nick Cummins and Ali Oetjen, who after emerging from the surf, stood shivering on the beach alongside their seemingly warmer comrades.

‘I’ll tell you what, all those who have got low body fat were hanging out,’ explained DS Ollie Ollerton.

‘It’s like number six [Nick], hates it. His hair was [imitates shaking hair].’

Added chief instructor Ant Middleton: ‘Number 16 [Ali] was also hating it. If I would’ve put them in the water, one more exposure, she would’ve chinned it off.’

After emerging from the water, both Nick, 33, and Ali appeared pale, with their teeth chattering, as they stood in between the other recruits on the sand.

As Ant told the recruits the challenge wasn’t over yet, Ali, 34, stammered: ‘I don’t… I don’t want to… Cold.’

The show’s DS have repeatedly told the recruits that physical strength isn’t as important as mental resilience and stamina.

‘It’s a state of mind, that’s it!’ Ant told the recruits during the ice water challenge.

Added Ollie: ‘Your body thinks it’s going to die, and it’s about being able to go beyond that point and understand that it’s lying to you. You’ve got so much more to give.’
