Britons were on Saturday treated to the spectacular sight of the first Halloween Blue Moon in 40 years.

The incredible sight was photographed in places including London, Birmingham, Gravesend and Wiltshire.

It is the first time since 1944, during the Second World War, that a Blue Moon has been visible all across the world on Halloween.

The name of the phenomenon stems from the fact that it is the second full moon to appear in a calendar month. The first one of October occurred right at the start of the month.

Given that trick or treating has been largely cancelled this year because of coronavirus restrictions, Britons and others across the world had the perfect chance to see the moon in all its glory without any distractions.

The last time the UK saw a Halloween full moon was back in 2001, and before that it was 1955.

Anyone with a smartphone will have been able to get a good snapshot, such was the moon’s size on Saturday evening.
