Armie Hammer discusses struggling to be ‘the best father’ and fighting to find happiness

Armie Hammer has discussed his fight to find happiness after announcing his split from wife Elizabeth Chambers amid an alleged flirtation with Lily James.

The actor, 34, spoke to GQ’s Chief Content Officer Jonathan Heaf at 2020’s GQ Heroes, where he was candid about life with his two children Harper, aged five, and Ford, aged three, who he shares with his estranged wife, 38.

The comments come hot on the heels of reports from sources close to the couple, who said their marriage went into a nose-dive in the Autumn of 2019 after she found passionate texts and letters from a mystery woman who signed herself ‘Adeline’.

While Adeline’s identity remains a mystery, sources also claimed Lily and Armie grew close after appearing in passionate scenes in the adaptation of the 1938 Daphne du Maurier novel, and insiders added that the pair formed a close bond on set.

Armie and Elizabeth announced their split in July after 10 years of marriage and it was reported earlier this month that he had filed for joint custody of their children.

Speaking to GQ about fatherhood and finding inner contentment, he said: ‘I can’t be the best father if I’m not the best version of myself. I can’t be the best friend…

‘I can’t be the best actor. I don’t think I’ll ever get to the point where I say, ‘I’ve nailed it. This is it. I’m happy…’ But I love the idea of struggling to get that a little bit more every day.’

Speaking about his Call Me By Your Name co-star Timothée Chalamet and about finding ‘real friends’ in the industry, he said: ‘One of the great things about this business is you get to go to different places and meet different people and interact with people all the time…

‘And now and then you meet someone or interact with someone and go, ‘Hey, you’re not just a work friend. You’re a real friend,’ and I like that.’

He says it’s been fascinating to watch Timothée deal with his rise to fame, but he’s never been worried about him: ‘He’s dealt with it better than I would have done at 22, 23,’ he said. ‘He dealt with it, in many ways, better than I would have done now.’

Armie admitted he realised he ‘wasn’t ok’ in lockdown, as he said: ‘I had a very intense wake-up call one day and I needed more help than I realised.’

He called his friend Brendan, who works in mental health, and started working with a therapist multiple times a week. ‘I still work with her once a week at least.’

Without distractions, he revealed he started to spiral: ‘There was one specific moment where I was not in my best mental state…

‘And in the midst of this moment that was very intense, I had a very intense moment of clarity, where I sat my head up and thought: I’m not OK.’
