TALK OF THE TOWN: Sadiq Khan spends his 50th birthday telling diners to leave a restaurant

TALK OF THE TOWN: London mayor Sadiq Khan spends his 50th birthday telling diners to leave upmarket restaurant at 10pm curfew

He has been an outspoken critic of the Government’s 10pm curfew on pubs and restaurants, so I nearly choked on my face mask when I heard that London mayor Sadiq Khan spent his 50th birthday telling diners that it was time to leave an upmarket restaurant.

Labour politician Khan was happily celebrating his birthday at the Italian, Michelin-starred River Cafe in Hammersmith – where starters average at £25, mains £40 and an ice cream will set you back £10 – until the curfew approached and he went into bossy mode.

My mole tells me that patrons were stunned when, as the clock was about to strike ten, the mayor jokingly asked the restaurant’s owner if he could use his executive powers to give diners their marching orders.

Having been given the green light by chef and owner of River Cafe, Lady Ruth Rogers, who is a pal of Khan, he proceeded to approach each table and tell them to leave.

One diner told me: ‘Most of the guests saw the funny side with a few taking videos and pictures, but there were one or two who looked somewhat offended.

‘Plus going from table to table wasn’t exactly a good example of social distancing.’

Formula 1 presenter Natalie Pinkham had to make a quick pitstop of her own when she spotted a crease in her £239 Maje floral dress while reporting from the Portuguese Grand Prix.

‘Bad ironing. Good time management,’ the 43-year-old told her Instagram followers as she kept her dress on but whipped the skirt on the ironing board.

I’m not sure what impresses me more – her quick-thinking or the backstage ironing facilities at the motor racing showcase.

Which begs the question –does Lewis Hamilton iron his own race suit?

My lips are sealed, but…

Which star of TV and film was so inebriated at the relaunch of a five-star London hotel that her handlers had to hide her away?

The normally regal celebrity was due for a sit-down chat with me, but apparently she could barely string a sentence together and so had to be bundled into a cab.
