A police officer found ‘brain matter’ on the pavement after a man was beaten with a baseball bat by his ex girlfriend’s new lover, a court has heard.

PD Dean Williams made the gruesome discovery after James White, 22, allegedly battered 33-year-old Paul Flory over the head.

Mr Flory was lured to a house in Harefield, west London, by ex-girlfriend Crystal Culhane, 22, on August 18 last year, the Old Bailey has heard.

White then tried to murder him with the bat, it is claimed.

Giving evidence PC Williams said: ‘I spotted what I suspected to be brain matter. There was claret splattered on the floor.’

Mr Flory was left with horrific injuries to his head and body and found in a critical condition by members of the public.

He was rushed to hospital where paramedics battled to save his life.

Crystal Culhane (pictured leaving the Old Bailey), 22, has been accused of recruiting James White, 22, to savagely beat her ex-boyfriend following his release from prison

Earlier Tyrone Silcott, prosecuting, said: ‘There is no dispute that Mr Flory was subject to an attack at that time and in a location very near to Mr White’s address.

‘Due to the severity of the attack and injuries sustained Mr Flory is unable to assist with who attacked him.

‘The attack was vicious and frenzied leaving Mr Flory with horrific life-threatening injuries.’

Yesterday, Jamie Hattam, 33, who previously had a one-night stand with White, broke down into sobs as she told the court she saw her former lover at the scene of the brutal attack.

‘The paramedics who treated Mr Flory at the scene found him unconscious with very severe head injuries and major fractures to the skull, front and back and major swelling to the eyes and face with massive bleeding,’ Mr Silcott added.

‘He also had massive bruising to his abdomen and chest. It is a miracle he survived the attack.’

Describing the events leading up to the attack, he said: ‘Mr White and Ms Culhane lured Paul Flory to a location near Mr White’s address at approximately 1:30am on 18th August 2019.

‘Once Mr Flory attended, he was on his mobile phone in contact with or trying to contact Ms Culhane.

‘Mr White then left his address where he had spent the evening with Ms Culhane and attacked Mr Flory with a baseball bat.’

Mr Silcott said Mr Flory had been in a long-term relationship with Culhane but there was a history of domestic violence.

‘Mr Flory, had recently served a period in custody for assaulting Ms Culhane,’ he told jurors.

‘He was convicted despite Ms Culhane refusing to assist the prosecution.’

The pair were banned from having contact by the courts but reignited their relationship after Mr Flory’s release from prison.

‘In the days leading up to the attack on Mr Flory, Ms Culhane had also rekindled a relationship with Mr White having previously had a short romantic relationship with him some years before,’ Mr Silcott added.

Culhane, of West Drayton, denies attempted murder and White, of Uxbridge, denies attempted murder and having an offensive weapon.

The trial continues.
