Grantchester’s hunky Tom Brittney shows he’s a dab hand with a spanner as he pulls on a tight white vest for scenes as Reverend Will Davenport

For his many, many fans it’s been a long wait, but now Grantchester’s dishy crime-fighting vicar is back.

In somewhat less than clerical garb, Tom Brittney, 29, was spotted filming scenes for the sixth series of the ITV drama earlier this week.

Dressed in a tight, white vest and covered in car grease, his character – Reverend Will Davenport – showed he was a dab hand as a mechanic as he worked on a vintage vehicle.

Tom, who took over the role from James Norton in season four and left legions of admirers swooning, was last seen in Grantchester at the beginning of this year.

The new series, being filmed on a Covid secure set, will be broadcast next year.

It will resume in 1958 and will see the vicar and DI Geordie Keating, played by Robson Green, team up once again to solve crimes.

The show is adapted from the Grantchester Mysteries novels by James Runcie.

Tessa Peake-Jones is expected to return as Miss Chapman and Al Weaver will once again play Leonard Finch, while Kacey Ainsworth (Cathy Keating), Oliver Dimsdale (Daniel Marlowe) and Nick Brimble (Jack Chapman) will also reprise their roles .

ITV have also confirmed a number of special guest stars for the series, including Jemma Redgrave, Gary Beadle, Dominic Mafham, Rachael Stirling and Rebecca Front.

ITV hinted that the new series will first see drama unfold at a holiday camp, saying: ‘In the first episode of the new series, Geordie, Cathy and their family, Will, Leonard and Mrs C take a much needed holiday together.  

‘However, what sets out to be a fun-filled break for everyone at a holiday camp, is interrupted by a tragic death at the resort.

‘Geordie and Will are left with no choice but to help out, as an investigation into the death begins. As events unfold on the trip, there will be serious repercussions for the rest of the series.’
