Sophia Lillis is becoming one of Hollywood’s favorite young leading ladies with roles in It, Gretel & Hansel and Sharp Objects.

And the New York-born actress is sure to tug on our heartstrings in her latest film, Uncle Frank, which premieres next month.

She stars alongside Paul Bettany in a ’70s coming-of-age story of homophobia, acceptance and family in the rural south, coming Thanksgiving to Amazon Prime.

The 18-year-old served an understated retro glam in the first trailer, where she gives a glimpse at her portrayal of teenager Beth Bledsoe.

Beth leaves her southern hometown in 1973 to study at New York University, where her Uncle Frank Bledsoe (Bettany) is a literary professor.

She shows up on his doorstep for a surprise visit, quickly discovering a secret about his ‘roommate’ that sets in some culture shock.

The young woman learns that her uncle is gay, and he’s been living with his partner Walid ‘Wally’ Nadeem (Peter Macdissi) for the past decade.

Set long before the ‘guncle’ (gay uncle) became a social media term, Beth begins to form a rare bond with her misunderstood family member.

But as the fish-out-of-water develops a new appreciation for Uncle Frank, she has to keep his secret from the rest of the family.

It’s easier said than done when Frank’s dad and Beth’s grandfather (Stephen Root) dies, and they have to make the road trip home for the funeral. 

Although Frank refuses to let Wally come, his partner secretly tags along to show support during a devastating time.

Written and directed by Six Feet Under creator Alan Ball, the movie also stars Judy Greer, Margo Martindale, Lois Smith and Steve Zahn.

Uncle Frank made its world premiere at Sundance Film Festival back in January, and it premieres November 26 on Amazon Prime.
