Mummy Diaries: Sam Faiers says she felt like a ‘fraud’ using filters before revealing acne struggle

Sam Faiers has revealed that she would feel ‘like a fraud’ when editing her pictures to hide her adult acne for Instagram posts.

The star, 29, explained how she always used ‘a filter and face tune to smooth out the skin’ when posting online before she decided to talk openly about her skin condition in August.

During a chat with her mum Sue on Thursday’s finale of The Mummy Diaries, Sam said: ‘I’d be like, what a fraud, as I was editing pictures and feeling self-conscious.’

Sam explained: ‘The dermatologist told me it was really common, and I think the hormonal change was when I stopped breastfeeding Rosie, it was hormonal acne.

‘And when I shared the pictures [of her acne] two months ago I was so surprised so many others suffered from it.

‘I’d never spoken about it, I’d always covered my skin with makeup and I know so many other women do.’

She continued: ‘And that’s the reason why I didn’t share pics [of her acne] before, because I was always using a filter and using face tune to smooth the skin – so I’d be like, what a fraud, as I was editing and self conscious and not ready to talk about it.’

‘I was hiding behind filters for far too long,’ she continued.

Proud mum Sue also praised her daughter, saying: ‘You skin has dramatically cleared up now and you want to help others. It’s so brave of you to show other women – and men of course – her skin and how bad it did get.’

The conversation came up after the beauty and her mum, who said she had also struggled with breakouts, took part in a photoshoot for Sam’s company Revive Collagen.

During the day they both donned white vest tops and posed up a storm to best show off their glowing complexions.

The day came with extra pressure for Sam as she was taking a creative lead on the project as well, with her laughing as she said: ‘It has to be successful or I’ll lose lots of money.’

Sam first discussed her cystic acne struggle in April by posting pictures to Instagram.

Sam explained she has suffered from the condition, which occurs when cysts form deep underneath the skin, for the past few years and hid behind filters and make-up because she felt ‘so embarrassed’.

In a lengthy post, Sam wrote: ‘I’ve been really nervous about posting this picture. The last few years I’ve been very quiet about the fact that I’ve been suffering with adult acne – in my case, it was hormonal.

‘After breastfeeding Rosie, my skin just broke out and I couldn’t get it under control. I tried absolutely everything. It felt like the more I was doing to stop it, the worse it became.’

Elsewhere in Thursday’s Mummy Diaries episode, Sam also reflected on her lads mags days, saying she’s ‘not ashamed of the pictures’.

However she added that now when she looks back at the snaps she thinks of the shoot days themselves.

She said: ‘I remember thinking “I don’t think I’m good enough” against all the other models… but now think we’re in such a good place with women empowering women and I’ve got a daughter so I want her to be comfortable in her own skin.’

Sam also discussed plans for turning 30, revealing she want’s to spend lots of time with her family – but cheekily adding ‘some diamond earrings would be nice too’.

The star also revealed that she has a bucket list, with a skiing trip and climbing a mountain making the to-do list.

Her beau Paul Knightley also seems to be planning ahead and hinted in a chat with Greg Shepherd that he’s been thinking about proposing.

He said: ‘Maybe next year, or the year after – we’ll let her get into her 30s first’

The hunk went on to add: ‘During lockdown, and I didn’t think we could get closer, but we did and I think we’re one step closer to getting married.’
