The signs Zac Efron is set to propose to girlfriend Vanessa Valladares on his 33rd birthday

Hollywood star Zac Efron will turn 33 on Sunday. 

And the rumour mill is spinning with speculation that he’ll celebrate his birthday by proposing to his Australian girlfriend, Vanessa Valladares.

The couple have remained suspiciously quiet for the past few weeks as the Baywatch star settles into life Down Under.

Zac and Vanessa have both been MIA on Instagram while focusing on their relationship, with neither posting anything since early September.

Despite this, it’s believed they have been putting down roots in Byron Bay – the coastal NSW town where Vanessa, 25, used to work as a waitress.

Zac was rumoured to be the mystery buyer of a record-breaking $22million mansion near Wategos Beach earlier this month.

The property features five bedrooms, a heated infinity pool, a wine cellar, and steps down to the famous beach.

The couple were also spotted last month at various celebrity hotspots in Sydney, including the Catalina restaurant in Rose Bay.

In September, they were spotted looking loved-up while hitting the slopes at the Thredbo ski resort, 500km from Sydney.

While some might think a proposal is far-fetched, Zac has hinted that he wants a change in lifestyle after years in the Hollywood bubble.

Speaking on his Netflix documentary Down to Earth, the heartthrob said during a trip to Sardinia that he had to ‘get out’ of Los Angeles.

‘I’ve got to get out of Hollywood, I’m done. It’s not a place conducive to living a long, happy, mentally-sound life,’ he said intensely.

Zac said it was difficult to make a life as an actor, and hinted that he was ready to leave it all behind.

‘The nature of being an actor or being in the public eye, sort of leads to isolation at times,’ he said. ‘I currently have a roommate but sometimes it’s hard to go out.’      

Zac was reportedly introduced to Vanessa in July by her boss at the Byron Bay General Store café. 

A source told People at the time that Zac was ‘having fun’ with his new girlfriend.

‘You can tell that they are having fun. She spends a lot of time at this house,’ the insider said.

The U.S. star has been living in Byron Bay since March, and is said to be ‘riding out’ the coronavirus pandemic in Australia.

He reportedly extended his tourist visa from three to 12 months after meeting Vanessa, and had initially only planned to stay in the country briefly.

Zac has spoken before about wanting to get married, telling NW magazine in 2016 that he definitely saw it in his future.

‘Sure. I hope so,’ he said. ‘I’ve still got time, I think. I’ve not given up yet.’  

In the same interview, he did acknowledge that ‘moving around’ made it tough for him to maintain a long-term relationship.

‘It can be tough. As an actor, you’re always moving. It’s hard to commit to a relationship if you can’t be 100 per cent there for that person,’ he said.

Zac previously dated actress Vanessa Hudgens from 2005 to 2010, after meeting on set of High School Musical. His other exes include Lily Collins and Halston Sage.
