The sequence came as McConnell was asked about the pandemic by his Democratic opponent Amy McGrath, as the retired U.S. Marine Corps fighter pilot grilled him about the federal response.

McGrath said that the Republican leader’s response amounted to a ‘dereliction of duty’ amid misplaced priorities in the highest levels of government.

‘His one job is to help America through this crisis right now in passing legislation to keep our economy afloat so that people can make ends meet and instead of doing that, he is trying to ram through a Supreme Court nominee right now, instead of negotiating, which is what he should have been doing all summer long to make that happen,’ she said.

The incumbent senator, who is running for his seventh term, minimized her platform: ‘I think her entire campaign is: She’s a Marine, she’s a mom and I’ve been there too long.’

McGrath said, ‘Senator, you’ve been there for 36 years. How’s it looking, Kentucky?’

The debate came ahead of Kentucky beginning collecting ballots via in-person voting, in addition to absentee ballots which are already arriving.

In the debate, McGrath cited her military background in contrast to what she labeled partisan polices on McConnell’s part in blaming Democrats for the inability to get deals done.

‘If you want to call yourself a leader, you’ve got to get things done,’ she said. ‘Those of us who served in the Marines, we don’t just point fingers at the other side, we get the job done.’
