Ant Middleton says celebrities have the opportunity to ‘remake’ themselves on SAS Australia

‘They can prove they’re not that person’: SAS Australia’s Ant Middleton reveals why the gruelling reality show is the perfect way for stars to ‘remake’ themselves after scandals

Former British soldier Ant Middleton is about to front the tough new reality series SAS Australia.

And the 39-year-old revealed on Wednesday that one of the main reasons why celebrities sign up for the show is that it gives them the opportunity to ‘remake’ themselves after being involved in a scandal.

‘They have the opportunity to define themselves in front of their nation,’ he told industry TV Tonight.

Ant explained that some of the celebrities have been defined by their headlines, and SAS Australia gives them the chance to present a new side of themselves.

‘Maybe they’ve been misinterpreted by the media, by one story that’s defined their whole life [to the public],’ he said.

‘Misinterpreted by an article, by a photo that’s been taken of them, and they want to come out and prove that they’re not that person.’

Several participants on SAS Australia have been involved in scandals in the past.

Schapelle Corby spent nine years in prison in Bali for drug smuggling; model Arabella Del Busso has been accused of faking pregnancies and miscarriages during her tumultuous relationship with NRL star Josh Reynolds; Candice Warner was famously caught in a ‘toilet tryst’ up with rugby player Sonny Bill Williams in 2007; and swimmer Shayna Jack is an alleged drug cheat.

Ant also said some of the celebrities will surprise viewers with their resilience.

‘I thought maybe we would get cold showers at least. We smelt so bad!’ she said on Monday.

Candice, who is married to cricketer David Warner, knew the physical challenges would be tough so she worked out in the gym diligently prior to filming.

‘I had a baby [daughter Isla Rose] a little over 12 months ago. In my pregnancy I lost all my core strength and struggled to do one pull-up or push-up after giving birth,’ she said.

‘I knew I needed to work on that so I went hard in the gym. I also ran a lot and tried walking once a week with a 25kg pack on.’

For the former Ironwoman, it was not the physical endurance tests that she had difficulty with, but the daily tasks like packing her kit.

‘In the end it was the most mundane exercises that would test my character. Packing a Bergen [backpack] each day sounds like an easy task but believe me it’s much harder than it looks,’ she said.

SAS Australia premieres Monday, October 19, at 7.30pm on Channel Seven
