Patrick Dangerfield’s wife Mardi and Ben Brown’s wife Hester call for ban on ‘offensive’ WAG term

WAGs revolt: AFL star Patrick Dangerfield’s wife Mardi and Ben Brown’s wife Hester call for ‘offensive’ nickname to be banned… despite queen bee Bec Judd embracing it

It was the term which catapulted Rebecca Judd, Nadia Bartel and Kyly Clarke to stardom.

But don’t call the wives of Geelong superstar Patrick Dangerfield and Kangaroos forward Ben Brown a WAG.

Mardi Dangerfield and Hester Brown are calling for a ban of the popular term -short for wives and girlfriends – telling the Daily Telegraph it is ‘offensive’.

Melbourne-based marriage celebrant Hester revealed the pair would prefer to be called ‘significant others’.

‘The use of significant makes you feel like you’re not just somebody’s something, your important,’ Hester said.

Mother-of-two Mardi added: ‘It’s really hard sometimes to have an identity and create space for your own voice’.

The pair are preparing to launch a new podcast called ‘Significant Others’, which will see them interview the spouses of high profile individuals.

They are hoping to ‘dispel myths and stereotypes’ around players and their partners.

‘We want to challenge that stereotype a little bit and just show that they are educated, intelligent, experienced, human beings that are standing alongside someone with a public profile and supporting them in different ways,’ she explained.

Ben and Hester tied the knot in 2017.

The red-headed beauty rose to prominence last year, when she shared a powerful image of herself breastfeeding her then nine-month-old daughter Aila ahead of the Brownlow Awards.

‘More important things,’ she captioned the black and white image of her tenderly cradling her daughter in her fairytale Gwendolynne Burkin gown.

The couple is expecting a new bundle of joy to arrive in February.

Last month, they revealed they had been expecting twins but tragically lost one of the unborn babies.
