Joe Exotic TV series starring Kate McKinnon as Carol Baskin gets series order

Tiger King fans will get to see the epic story from the Netflix series unfold in a new series that just got an unprecedented straight-to-series order.

NBCUniversal Television and Streaming issued a straight-to-series order for Joe Exotic, starring Kate McKinnon as Carol Baskin, in a cross-platform deal.

The limited series will debut NBCU’s broadcast network NBC, cable network USA Network and new streaming service Peacock in what Deadline calls, ‘an unprecedented rollout.’

The series hails from Universal Cable Productions, based on Season 2 of the Wondery podcast.

UCP first announced the series back in November 2019, months before Netflix’s Tiger King became a worldwide phenomenon, with McKinnon attached to both star and executive produce.

The title role of Joe ‘Exotic’ Schreibvogel has not yet been cast at this time, and there is no word on when production may begin, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The series will be based on the true events following Carole Baskin (McKinnon), ‘a big cat enthusiast, who learns that when fellow exotic animal lover Joe “Exotic” Schreibvogel is breeding and using his big cats for profit, she sets out to shut down his venture, inciting a quickly escalating rivalry.’

The show’s official description adds that Carole, ‘has a checkered past of her own’ and that ‘Joe will stop at nothing to expose what he sees as her hypocrisy.’

Joe Exotic won’t be the only show trying to capitalize on the Tiger King craze, though, given its straight-to-series order, it may have a jump on the competition.

It was reported in May that Nicolas Cage had signed on to play Joe Exotic in an untitled TV series from CBS TV Studios, Imagine Entertainment and American Vandal showrunner Dan Lagana.

That series will be based on the June 2019 Texas Monthly article Joe Exotic: A Dark Journey Into the World of a Man Gone Wild.

That project hasn’t been set up at a network quite yet, and the casting of Carol Baskin has yet to be announced.

The limited series will be written by Etan Frankel (Sorry For Your Loss), who serves as showrunner and will executive produce through his first-look deal with UCP.

McKinnon will also executive produce alongside Wondery’s Hernan Lopez, Marshall Lewy and Aaron Hart.

Joe Exotic is currently serving a 22-year prison sentence on 17 federal counts of animal abuse and two counts of murder-for-hire, while Baskin has been reportedly in talks to star on Season 29 of ABC’s Dancing With the Stars.
