Olivia Wilde picked to direct new female-fronted Marvel project rumored to be a Spider-Woman movie
Olivia Wilde is set to direct a top-secret female-lead Marvel superhero movie for Sony.
No character details have been revealed but insiders expect the project to be about Spider-Woman, according to Deadline.
The Booksmart director, 36, will work from a script written by partner Katie Silberman. Amy Pascal will produce and Rachel O’Connor will executive produce.

Wilde almost passed on the project because of her busy schedule but she was eventually won over by the chance to helm a big-budget superhero production, according to insiders.
Over the years Spider-woman has been the alter ego of many characters, making it unclear what direction Wilde will be taking with the story.
Gwen Stacy, Mary Jane Watson, Julia Carpenter and Jessica Drew are just a few of the women who have used the alias across Spider-Man timelines.
The rumored Spider-Woman film would be Sony’s second female-focused film from its Marvel portfolio. S.J. Clarkson was recently recruited to direct a Madame Webb movie for the studio.

Sony is also developing movies based on Black Cat and Silver Sable, both characters that originated in Spider-Man sagas.
There are several other female-directed superhero movies in the works across the industry.

It will probably some time until the Spider-Woman project comes to fruition.
Wilde is currently in pre-production on the psychological thriller Don’t Worry, Darling.
She is also developing the gymnast drama Perfect at Searchlight, based on the life story of Olympian Kerri Strug. Wilde is also working on a Christmas buddy film at Universal.
