Britney Spears’ first husband Jason Alexander still has ‘love’ for singer and wants back in her life

He was married to Britney Spears for 55 hours 16 years ago.

And on Wednesday, Jason Alexander showed up outside a downtown Los Angeles court where a hearing took place in the pop star’s bid to have her father Jamie replaced as her conservator.

As he mingled with fans and #FreeBritney campaigners, Jason said he fully backs Britney’s legal action and that it’s the conservatorship that is preventing him and Britney from being in closer contact.

Speaking to UsWeekly, he said he’s kept in touch with his former childhood friend and he’d be open to getting back together with her if she wanted it.

He said he'd be open to giving romance another shot if she wants to

‘I’ve got love for her, definitely,” he told the magazine. ‘I’d love to be back in her life some way or another, but this conservatorship is holding that back from happening.’

He added: ‘We never were given a shot the first time around. If there’s feeling still there, maybe we see where they go but that’s not — you know that’s on her.

Jason, who told UsWeekly he’d been in contact via test with the singer as recently as Tuesday night, said he wants to see her ‘get what she rightly deserves.’

He explained: ‘From personal conversations, she doesn’t want to be under the conservatorship obviously and it’s affecting her life still to this day in a negative way.’

Jason and Britney, who grew up together in Kentwood, Louisiana, tied the knot in Las Vegas in January 2004. They were both 22 at the time.

However, the marriage was annulled just 55 hours later.

‘She just came out and asked me,’ Alexander said of the decision to get married. ‘She was like, ‘Well, let’s get married.’ And I was like, ‘Sure. You know, let’s do this.”

He told ABC News in 2012 that when her mother Lynn and managers found out, ‘everyone went crazy because there was no prenup.’

The subsequent annulment stated that the pop star ‘lacked understanding of her actions, to the extent that she was incapable of agreeing to the marriage.’

A few months later, Britney got engaged to backup dancer Kevin Federline and the two married in October 2004.

They had two sons together – Sean Preston, 14, and Jayden James, 13, but Britney filed for divorce in November 2006, two months after the birth of their youngest child.

For the past two years, Britney has been in a relationship with fitness trainer Sam Asghari, 26, who lives with her at her mansion in Thousand Oaks, north of Los Angeles.

In 2008, following her high profile breakdown and mental health crisis, Britney was made the subject of a conservatorship.

It gave her father control over her estate and finances as well as giving him the authority to make decisions on her behalf regarding her welfare.

In her legal battle, Britney is asking a judge to allow her temporary care manager Jodi Montgomery, who took over last year when her dad became ill, to continue permanently in that role.

Jason also spoke outside court about how the star is constantly monitored.

‘It’s really sad because it’s affecting her relationship with her kids and people like me and her friends that she’d like to hang out with but she can’t,’ he claimed.

‘She does get to do things, you know go to a vacation for a week, but it’s all supervised. It’s not like she can just go do what she wants.’

Seeks a change: Britney said in court documents that she is 'strongly opposed' to her dad Jamie continuing as sole conservator of her estate and finances. He was appointed in 2008 to oversee her welfare following her high profile mental health crisis

Jason’s appearance at the #FreeBritney rally was embraced enthusiastically by fans who thanked him for showing his support.

The #FreeBritney campaign has gathered momentum again recently with fans questioning some of the posts made to the star’s Instagram account, many of which appear similar and undated.

Their theory is that Britney is being held ‘hostage’ by her caretakers and that her posts are being faked to try and persuade people that she is okay.

This has led to online petitions, social media posts and protests calling for her to be ‘freed’.

Her dad Jamie described the campaign as ‘a joke’ in an interview with PageSix.com earlier this month and said the conspiracy theorists ‘don’t have a clue’.

The court hearing on Wednesday adjourned without any changes being made, according to TMZ.

The outlet reported that the hearing was simply a status conference and nothing can proceed through the legal system until certain documents are filed with the court.

According to TMZ, there’s a conservatorship in place because it’s been deemed that Britney is incapable of making life decisions for herself due to mental illness.

And that will remain the case until and if a declaration to the contrary is accepted by the court.
