Prison diversity officer, 51, ‘had inappropriate relationship with inmate and failed to report he had mobile phone behind bars’

Former HMP Wormwood Scrubs officer Pamela Belonwu, 51, entered into the six month ‘inappropriate’ relationship with inmate Clifton Thomas, a court heard

A prison diversity officer had an ‘inappropriate’ relationship with an inmate at a London prison and failed to report he had a phone with him, a court heard today.

Former HMP Wormwood Scrubs officer Pamela Belonwu, 51, entered into the six month ‘inappropriate’ relationship with inmate Clifton Thomas while he was serving time at the Category 2 prison in White City, Isleworth Crown Court heard. 

She is alleged to have committed misconduct in public office between 1 January 2019 and 3 July 2019.

Alongside the inappropriate’ relationship with Thomas, she is accused of failing to report a mobile telephone that was in his possession.

Belonwu has had managerial roles within the NHS and charity sector.

According to her Linkedin page, she is a ‘Distance learning tutor Criminon UK equality advisor at Her Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service’.

The relationship took place while Thomas was a serving time at Wormwood Scrubs (pictured), a Category 2 prison in White City, London, Isleworth Crown Court heard

The former prison officer wore a dark jacket and brown blouse and spoke only to confirm her identity and enter a not guilty plea.

Belonwu, of Pump Lane, New Cross, denies misconduct in public office and will stand trial at Isleworth Crown Court on June 20, 2022.

She also faces one count of transmitting an image or sound from a prison without authority.
