The couple were filmed by passersbys enjoying their romantic dinner on Brooklyn Bridge after they arrived armed with their very own portable alfresco restaurant.

The Gaskin’s simple outdoor dining DIY kit consisted of: a cheap table and chair set from Home Depot, a $5 table cover from Party City, electric candles from Amazon, table settings from Dollar General, plants from home, and takeout food and drinks.

Jasmin, a 34-year-old construction project manager, told Buzzfeed News she couldn’t have picked a more romantic setting than Brooklyn Bridge for a date night with her husband.

‘I love the New York City skyline so dinner on a breezy bridge that I’ve never done before was absolutely amazing,’ she said.

‘I couldn’t have picked a better candlelit dinner location other than the Brooklyn Bridge.’

The couple told Buzzfeed News the idea for their pop-up outdoor dining experiences came to them because they don’t feel ready to join other New Yorkers in flocking to newly-reopened bars and restaurants.

However, they still want to enjoy the city’s new shift toward alfresco dining and have some quality time together as a couple.

‘We don’t want to do the outdoor dining with other people around. We’re not there yet. So we just do it among ourselves,’ said Dean, a 37-year-old high school basketball coach.

‘We have a full range of locations we could travel to all over New York City and that can be our date night.’

The couple said they began their pop-up dates on July 12 when they were forced to get creative in celebrating their five-year wedding anniversary.

Their original plans had been a trip to the beaches of Cabo San Lucas in Mexico but, due to the pandemic, they swapped it for dinner on the beach of Coney Island instead.

‘I just told my husband that I wanted my toes in the sand and he took that idea and he upgraded it,’ Jasmin told Buzzfeed.

Other creative ideas have involved a BBQ in front of a colorful Manhattan mural with their children and a double date with friends in Brooklyn Bridge Park.

The couple said people first thought they were ‘crazy’ but now people stop and ask ‘Why didn’t I think of this?’

Dean said he hopes they can inspire other New York couples to explore new ways to spend quality time together.

‘Simple romance goes a long way,’ he told Buzzfeed.
