Dr Alex is currently working on the frontline of the coronavirus pandemic at the University Hospital Lewisham in south-east London and split from his girlfriend of one-and-a-half years, Amelia Bath at the start of last month.

The couple were forced to separate during lockdown because of Dr Alex’s job and said they had agreed ‘it was for the best’ to go their separate ways.

The television personality recently told how he is ‘hanging on by a thread’ after the loss of his brother but has vowed to use his pain to shed light on mental health.

Taking to Instagram on Monday, Alex shared a snap of himself standing beside his car as he prepared for return to London. The doctor said it was time for him to ‘rebuild and grow’.

He wrote: ‘There is no doubt that my life changed immeasurably two weeks ago. We are thrown into the deep end at times, however, with family and friends we can overcome even the most seemingly insurmountable challenges.

‘It is now time for me to head back to London, to reflect, rebuild and grow. I already have a fire in me, things I want to tackle and change, especially when it comes to mental health.

‘For now I just want to say thank you to all of you who have supported me. The kindness has been truly overwhelming. Please know it has helped me no end and continues to get me through each day. Thank you ❤️’.

Alex was left shocked when a follower took issue with him for being on social media so shortly after Llyr passed away last month.

The star took a screen grab of the exchange, in which the person responded to his seaside picture with the comment: ‘your brother is dead get off social media.’

Sharing his anguish at the response, Alex penned: ‘Imagining being this person. I’m holding by a thread and you get people like this.’

In his next Instagram story, the medic explained to his fans why he was on social media, as he thanked them for support during this tough time.

He wrote: ‘I am honest and open with you all. The good, the bad and the ugly.

‘There is so much that isn’t shared online of course. So many of you are so kind and message me each day with well wishes.’

He concluded: ‘I often post to let you know I am still going strong x.’

Alex confirmed that his brother’s funeral took place last week and paid a heartbreaking tribute to his younger brother following the celebration of his life.

Sharing a photo of him with his arm around his sibling, standing in front of a scenic backdrop, Alex captioned the image: ‘Yesterday I said goodbye to my little brother Llŷr. It was the hardest day of my life.

‘Except it wasn’t goodbye. Llŷr, your dream was to become a doctor, you will live that dream. Every patient I see, we will do it together, you and I ❤️

‘Your favourite passion is cars, every time I am out driving, I know you will be there laughing and smiling with me.

‘I love you so much Llŷr, you are always with me, my boy ❤️”.

Llyr died just weeks before he was due to follow in his older brother’s footsteps and start medical school.

Announcing the tragic news last month, Alex wrote: ‘I can’t believe I am actually writing this post.

‘I have lost my beautiful little brother to mental health. I love you so much Llŷr. The kindest and most caring soul.

‘I was so proud of you starting medical school next month, you would have been the most incredible doctor. We are hurting so bad. No words can explain.

‘As a family we are devastated. We love you and miss you so much. Please rest in peace x Our boy.’
