Keke Palmer joins the cast of the Proud Family reboot and will play a teen activist in the upcoming Disney+ revival

Keke Palmer is living out a childhood dream as she has been cast in the upcoming revival of the beloved Disney cartoon series the Proud Family.

Disney+ announced that the 26-year-old star will voice a brand new character on The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder Disney on social media Thursday. 

This is exciting news for the rising star after it was reported last month that her GMA show, Strahan, Sara and Keke, was axed by the network.

Disney+ announced Keke’s casting in a Tweet writing: ‘There’s a new girl coming to town!’

Palmer will voice 14-year-old activist Maya Leibowitz-Jenkins, an all-new character, in the upcoming animated series.  

The network also shared some artwork of Maya, depicting a fierce teenage girl wearing grey jeans, sneakers and an ochre colored zip up.

Maya has her brunette hair cornrows with some bright red highlights and in the image she is standing proud with her cartoon fist raised and a look of determination on her face.

An activist in her own life, Keke gushed in a Tweet about the announcement: ‘❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ DREAMS COME TRUE!’

The original Proud Family cartoon aired on Disney Channel from 2001-2005 and it was revealed in February that the series would be revived on the Mouse House’s streaming platform. 

However, there is no release date for the reboot yet.

Proud Family starred Kyla Pratt as Penny Proud, Tommy Davidson and Paula Jai Parker as her dad and mom Oscar and Trudy Proud.

Jo Marie Payton played Suga Mama, and Cedric the Entertainer dazzled as Uncle Bobby Proud.

The entire original core cast is returning for the upcoming revival which will also include new characters like Keke’s Maya.  

In addition to joining the show, Keke will also be moderating the Proud Family reunion for the NAACP Arts Culture and Entertainment Festival on Thursday. 

The animated sitcom is just another feather in the multi talented star’s cap.

Sadly, her gig co-hosting GMA’s Strahan, Sara and Keke is coming to an end as the show ‘is getting the ax’, Page Six reported in July.

Strahan, Sara and Keke was replaced in mid-March by daily Coronavirus report Pandemic: What You Need to Know.

A source told Page Six, ‘[Pandemic] was initially supposed to be a two-week experiment and the show did really well.’ ABC are now expected to make the lineup change permanent, according to the publication’s sources.
