The 1992 classic baseball film A League of Their Own will be adapted into an Amazon series featuring Abbi Jacobson, who will star in and produce the show.

‘This reinterpretation of A League of Their Own evokes the joyful spirit of Penny Marshall‘s beloved classic, while widening the lens to tell the story of an entire generation of women who dreamed of playing professional baseball,’ Amazon Studios said in a news release Thursday, Deadline reported.

Amazon said that ‘the show takes a deeper look at race and sexuality, following the journey of a whole new ensemble of characters as they carve their own paths towards the field, both in the League and outside of it.’

Joining Jacobson in the cast include Chanté Adams, D’Arcy Carden, Roberta Colindrez, Priscilla Delgado, Gbemisola Ikumelo and Kelly McCormack, with Kate Berlant, Molly Ephraim, and Melanie Field set to make guest appliances.

Jacobson and co-creator Will Graham lauded the 1992 movie directed by the late Penny Marshall, that showed World War II-era female professional baseball team in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, with an ensemble cast including Tom Hanks, Rosie O’Donnell, Madonna and Geena Davis.

Said Jacobson and Graham: ’28 years ago, Penny Marshall told us a story about women playing professional baseball that up until then had been largely overlooked. We grew up obsessed with the film, like everyone else.

The pair said in a statement that they ‘approached Sony’ in 2017 ‘with the idea of telling a new, still overlooked set of those stories.’

The duo credited ‘an enormously talented team of collaborators, an amazing cast, and the devoted support of Amazon’ in bringing the series to the small screen.

‘It took grit, fire, authenticity, wild imagination and a crackling sense of humor for these players to achieve their dreams,’ Jacobson and Graham said. ‘We’re hoping to bring audiences a story with all of those qualities.’

Amazon Studios TV exec Vernon Sanders quoted Hanks’ classic line from the film, saying in a statement that ‘there’s no crying in baseball, or at Prime Video.’

‘Will and Abbi have taken a classic movie, reimagining it for a new generation with new characters and their own fresh, modern vision on a timeless story of big dreams, friendship, love, and, of course, baseball,’ Sanders said in a statement.

He continued: We’re so excited to partner with Sony to bring this emotional, exciting new series to our Prime Video customers around the world.’
