Taylor Swift is making history with her new music.

Queen of the charts: Taylor Swift has made music history by having her album Folklore and its lead track Cardigan both debut at number one

Cardigan is Swift’s second song to debut at the top, following 2014’s Shake It Off. It marks her sixth Hot 100 chart-topper ever.

The lead track sold 71,000 copies in its first week and was streamed 34 million times.

Cardigan wasn’t the only instant success. The song The 1 debuted at number four while Exile featuring Bon Iver came in the sixth spot.

With this, Taylor is now the female artist with the most Hot 100 entries, boasting an impressive 113.

She is only outdone by Drake, who has 224, the Glee cast, with 207, and Lil Wayne with 169.

Taylor secured her seventh number one album in the US on Sunday evening.

The singer’s surprise studio album topped the charts in the United States, earning 846,000 equivalent album units in the week ending July 30, data from Nielsen Music/MRC has revealed (via Billboard)

It has been revealed as the largest debut week for an album since her own release in 2019, where Lover debuted with 867,000 units.

Her two albums are only beaten by another of her own – Reputation, which was unveiled in 2017 and sold 1.24 million units.

Of the 846,000 album equivalent units Folklore sold, 615,000 of these units were for full album sales.

The 289.85 million streams of the tracks on the album converted to 218,000 in streaming equivalent album (SEA) units, plus 13,000 in track equivalent album (TEA) units.

Only a week in and Taylor’s new album is already 2020’s top selling album, bigger than BTS’ Map of the Soul: 7, which sold 574,000 since February.

The singer had recently revealed she didn’t tell her friends she was making the LP, before its release on July 24.

‘No one knew I was making an album. I didn’t even tell my friends until right before the announcement,’ Swift said during a fan Q&A event.

‘It was my own secret world I’d go to and I’ve never made music like that before,’ she added.

Swift also becomes the only artist in history with seven albums to sell at least 500,000 copies in a single week.
