Dua Lipa, Harry Styles and Ed Sheeran lead the British stars battling it out at the 2020 MTV VMAs

Dua Lipa leads the British nominations at this year’s MTV VMA Awards, which were announced on Thursday.

The singer, 24, is nominated in four categories, and joins the likes of Harry Styles, Ed Sheeran and Lewis Capaldi to receive nods at the prestigious event.

Dua is set to go up against the former One Direction star, 26, in the Best Visual Effects, Best Direction and Best Art Direction category, while she is also nominated for Best Choreography.

Ed is nominated in the Best Collaboration category for his song Beautiful People from his No. 6 Collaborations Project album, which he worked on with Khalid. 

Lewis, meanwhile, is nominated for Best New Artist, which will see him go up against musicians like Doja Cat and Yungblud for the top spot.

The 1975’s music video If You’re Too Shy (Let Me Know) was shortlisted for the Best Alternative category, which they were nominated in with Lana Del Rey, All Time Low, Finneas, Machine Gun Kelly, and Twenty One Pilots.

Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga lead the 2020 MTV Video Music Award nominations with nine nominations each, followed close behind by Billie Eilish and The Weeknd, whom are both up for six. 

On top of the usual honours including Video and Artist Of The Year, new categories have been added to recognise work produced during quarantine.

Grande and Gaga were both nominated for Video Of The Year for their No. 1 dance hit Rain On Me, which is also competing for Song Of The Year, Best Collaboration, Best Pop, Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects and Best Choreography.

Eilish’s everything i wanted, The Weeknd’s Blinding Lights, Taylor Swift’s The Man, Eminem and Juice WRLD’s Godzilla, Future and Drake’s Life Is Good are all competing for the coveted Video Of The Year award.  

The VMAs will air live on Aug. 30 from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn and New York after Gov. Andrew Cuomo said last month ‘the event will follow all safety guidance, including limited or no audience.’ 

This year also marks the introduction of several new awards honoring performances and songs produced from home during the coronavirus pandemic: Best Music Video From Home and Best Quarantine Performance.

South Korean boy band BTS earned three nominations in the Best Pop, Best K-Pop, and Best Choreography categories, all for their hit single ON.

Other Video of the Year nominees include Eminem ft. Juice WRLD, Future ft. Drake, and Taylor Swift, whilst the Artist of the Year category also features DaBaby, Justin Bieber, Megan Thee Stallion, The Weeknd, and Post Malone.

The 2020 MTV VMAs are set to take place on August 30, and fans can vote across the 15 categories from now until August 23.
