A coastguard helicopter winchman plucked two terrified children from the waves after the pair were swept out to sea in Kent.

The Coastguard’s search and rescue helicopter rushed to the scene following a report of two children – believed to be aged nine and 12 – needing assistance in the sea off the coast of Dymchurch.

As amazed onlookers watched, a winchman was lowered down to safely rescue the youngsters. 

One child was taken to hospital as a precaution, Kent Police said. 

A Kent Police spokeswoman said: ‘Kent Police was called at 3.04pm on July 28, 2020, to a report of two children needing assistance in the water off Dymchurch.

‘The Kent Coastguard responded by helicopter. Kent Police and South East Coast Ambulance Service also attended.

‘Two children were bought safely out of the water and it is believed one child has been taken to a local hospital as a precaution.’ 

A Coastguard spokesperson said: ‘At just after 3pm this afternoon, HM Coastguard received a report of multiple persons in difficulty in the water off Dymchurch, Kent.

‘We sent the HM Coastguard search and rescue helicopter from Lydd, Dungeness Coastguard.’
