Shootings in NYC spike 176% in the last week compared to 2019 after weekend of mayhem that saw seven people murdered in 24 hours – and protests turn to riots as people slashed NYPD tires and lit fires on Manhattan streets

  • The number of shootings across New York City have spiked 176 percent in the last week compared to this time last year 
  • There were seven murders and 15 shootings across the city in just 24 hours on Sunday 
  • Among those killed was a 16-year-old boy who was shot dead at a basketball court in Brooklyn’s Cypress Hills neighboorhood at about 6.40pm 
  • The murder spree came after peaceful protests in support Portland’s demonstrations against police brutality descended into violence on Saturday 
  • Some demonstrators went on to wreak havoc and spark clashes with police as they slashed NYPD vehicle tires and set fire to trash cans
  • At least 14 people were arrested during the protests but it is not yet clear if they stemmed from incidents on Saturday night 

The number of shootings across New York City have spiked 176 percent in the last week compared to this time last year – as a weekend of mayhem saw seven people murdered in 24 hours and protests descend into riots in Manhattan. 

There were 47 shootings across the city last week compared to the 17 at the same time last year.

Fourteen of the 47 shootings were murders, while there were only five killings for the same week in 2019, police sources told the New York Post.

There were seven murders and 15 shootings across the city in just 24 hours on Sunday.

Six of those seven killings were shootings.

Three people were shot dead in separate shootings in Brooklyn and Queens, while four were killed in the Bronx.

Two others were killed in Staten Island and Manhattan.

Among those killed was a 16-year-old boy who was shot dead at a basketball court in Brooklyn’s Cypress Hills neighboorhood at about 6.40pm.

In that same incident, an 18-year-old boy was shot in the head and a 17-year-old boy was shot in the leg. Both are being treated in hospital with the elder boy in a critical condition. 

Also in Brooklyn, a 32-year-old man was found shot in the chest and face outside a Flatbush apartment building at about 7pm. 

A transgender woman was found stabbed to death in the hallway of an apartment building on West 192nd St in Manhattan at about 1.35am.  

Only a few of the shooting victims have been named, including Grashino Yancy who died on Staten Island after being shot in the leg at about 12.45am on Sunday.

In the Bronx, 37-year-old James Connor was shot in the head at 3.10am before 24-year-old Juancarlos Ortega was also shot in the head two hours later in a separate incident.

Shaka Ifill, 40, was shot in the back in Queens in what police are investigating as a possible domestic incident. He told investigators that his mother or girlfriend shot him before later dying in hospital.

Hundreds of protesters marched over the Brooklyn Bridge and into downtown Manhattan amid a wave of anger across the country over President Donald Trump’s planned ‘surge’ of federal agents into main cities. 

Some demonstrators went on to wreak havoc and spark clashes with police as they slashed NYPD vehicle tires and set fire to trash cans as people were dining nearby at outdoor restaurants. 

At least 14 people were arrested during the protests but it is not yet clear if they stemmed from incidents on Saturday night.
