TV presenter Eamonn Holmes has recalled the horrifying moment he feared he would die after punching his hand through a glass door during a row with his brother Leonard.

The This Morning host, 60, revealed the gash was so deep that he could see the bone after his attempt to ‘swing’ at his older sibling’s head went awry aged 14.

Reflecting on the stomach-churning moment, he explained he was rushed to Belfast’s Mater Hospital by his late father, who was also named Leonard, on the first day of his school’s summer holidays.

Recalling the gory moment, he shared with Best: ‘After extreme provocation, I would like to point out – I took a swing at his head with a left hook. The problem arose when he decided to put a glass door between me and his face.

‘Leonard lived to fight another day. But me and the glass door? We became the casualties. I will never forget looking down at my wrist and seeing white bone, through a lot of red flesh.

‘There was blood spurting everywhere from my wrist and hand, so wrapped in a towel, Dad, whilst telling Leonard he ‘would deal with him later’, took me straight to casualty.’

With Eamonn fearing the worst, the broadcaster added: ‘I was born in the very same hospital.  In that moment in time, as blood gushed out of my hand and wrist, I thought I was going to die there as well.’

Despite the trauma, the Belfast native explained that he managed to not pass out while his wound was stitched up.

Eamonn grew up with four brothers; Conor, Brian, Leonard and Colm, and has previously referred to them as his ‘best friends’.

The presenter and his wife Ruth Langsford are currently covering for Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby on This Morning during their two month summer break.

Earlier this month, Eamonn and Ruth made a surprise return to Celebrity Gogglebox on Friday after her husband accused the programme of ‘cruel’ editing.

The Channel 4 show has since apologised after they edited the programme to show Eamonn joking about his wife’s labour rather than a touching story about his father’s death.

The broadcaster revealed they would be re-editing the show for future repeats and catch-up services.
