Ocado, Iceland and Co-op emerge as the lockdown winners as supermarket spending hits record high

Ocado, Iceland and Co-op have emerged as the big lockdown winners as supermarket spending hit a record high.

Figures from Kantar showed grocery sales rose 16.9 per cent in the 12 weeks to July 12 to £31.6billion.

Ocado saw sales jump 45.5 per cent as demand for online deliveries soared. Iceland sales were up 34.1 per cent with shoppers stocking up on frozen food.

And increased numbers of families shopping locally, rather than driving to a big supermarket, helped send Co-op sales up 30.6 per cent.

But Kantar said grocery sales growth has started to slow on the back of lockdown restrictions being eased.

Supermarket sales for the four weeks to July 12 grew by 14.6 per cent against the same period last year.

Morrisons was the strongest performer of the UK’s ‘big four’ grocers, as it reported a 17.4 per cent jump in sales over the period.

Kantar’s monthly grocery market share figures revealed that sales growth slowed as the reopening of pubs and restaurants affected momentum for supermarket chains.

Data from Nielsen revealed that in the four weeks ending July 11 sales of alcohol were up by 31 per cent.
