She has previously spoken about being the target of ‘death threats’ and ‘relentless’ online bullying. 

But Tones And I (real name Toni Watson) issued some choice words to her detractors on Sunday.

In a powerful Instagram post, the Dance Monkey hitmaker, 26, uploaded a paragraph of text which read: ‘Last time I checked you didn’t need to be ”pretty” to write a good song.’

She continued: ‘And it will be a cold day in hell when I join the club of women that have only gotten somewhere because of what they look like. Thanks.’ 

It wasn’t long before the post was inundated by supportive comments from Tones And I’s legion of fans. 

Several Australian celebrities also commented on the post, including Australian rapper G Flip who wrote ‘Love ya’, and singer Tkay Maidza who simply penned ‘Yesss!’

While accepting Best Female Artist, she delivered an emotional speech in which she addressed the fact she wasn’t a ‘typically girly’ singer.

‘To me, those things don’t really define what it is to be a female artist in this industry anymore,’ Toni said.

‘It’s being brave and courageous and true to yourself. No one could have ever prepared me for the whole world judging me and comparing you to other artists.

‘But what’s most important is that you have to be a good person and care about others and carry yourself well.’  

Tones and I started out busking on the streets of Byron Bay, NSW, back in 2017.

It was there that she met her manager, prompting her to quit her retail job and move to the Gold Coast to focus on her music.

She was soon featured on Triple J’s Unearthed rotation, but it was her catchy single Dance Monkey that skyrocketed her career.
