How most road accidents take place during the day in fine weather at 21 to 30mph with just 11% when it’s raining

  • Figures show there are just under 169,000 crashes in Britain a year- or 463 a day
  • Researchers found that the majority of road accidents take place in the day
  • Study suggests more than 60 per cent happen at speeds between 21-30mph

It’s not drivers speeding in foggy conditions who have the most crashes – but those driving slowly in fine weather.

A new study has found that the majority of road accidents take place in the day without a rain cloud in sight – and at speeds of between 21-30mph.

The researchers, who analysed the latest data from the Department for Transport, revealed there are just under 169,000 crashes in Britain every year – or 463 each day.

Of these, 81 per cent take place in fine weather, with just 11 per cent happening in the rain and 0.5 per cent in the snow.

The study, by insurance broker Carole Nash, also found 63 per cent took place at speeds of between 21-30mph and just three per cent at 61-70mph.
