Girl, three, dies after being knocked down by car right outside her house and suffering appalling head injuries as woman, 32, is arrested for dangerous driving

A three-year-old girl has died after being knocked down by a car outside her home in Warwickshire on Friday.

The child was hit by a black Skoda Citigo at around 5.45pm on Brunswick Street, Leamington Spa and a 32-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving. She remains in police custody.

The child suffered serious head injuries was rushed to hospital where she died on Saturday. Heartbroken family members were seen hugging each other and weeping as they gathered by the scene of the tragedy on Sunday.

The girl’s father said: ‘She only died yesterday. We can’t believe it. We are heartbroken but police are doing everything they can to help.

‘It is the most horrendous time for us.’

The girl’s uncle added: ‘It happened here, outside the family’s house. It is too raw. It is devastating for the whole family.’

The family were described by a local shopkeeper as ‘very nice’, with the girl’s death coming as a ‘shock to the community’.

The shop owner revealed that her father had come into his shop just ten minutes before the tragic incident.

Warwickshire Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward as part of the ongoing investigation into how the tragedy happened.

They are also keen to speak to the owner of a Mazda, believed to be silver or blue, who was driving behind the black Skoda before it collided with the girl. The Mazda driver quickly sped away after seeing the incident.

The force are also calling for anyone with CCTV or dash cam footage to present this as evidence. 

Superintendent Emma Bastone from Warwickshire Police said: ‘Our thoughts remain with the family of the little girl following this terrible incident.

‘We have launched a thorough investigation into how the collision occurred and we’re keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident or saw the child or the car in the moments leading up to the collision.’
