The Voice’s Kelly Rowland admits she lived in Beyonce’s shadow and feared comparisons

During Tuesday’s episode of The Voice Australia, Kelly Rowland made a candid confession while mentoring singer Chris Sebastian. 

Chris, 31, is the brother of The Voice mentor and pop star Guy Sebastian, 38, and he admitted to his coach, Kelly, 39, that he felt stuck in Guy’s shadow. 

Kelly made her own stunning admission – she too, knows what it’s like to live in the shadow of a more famous loved one.

In her case, it’s her longtime friend and former Destiny’s Child bandmate Beyoncé, 38. 

Kelly admitted: ‘I know this feeling. Can you imagine what it’s like being in a group with Beyoncé?’ 

The singer went on to reveal that she often second-guessed her own choices in an attempt to avoid comparisons between the two women.

Tough: 'I would just torture myself in my head. Like, I can't wear this dress because they're going to say it's like B. Or I can't have a song like that because it sounds too much like B. They're gonna compare anyways,' she said

Honest: 'I would be lying if I said no, it's never bothered me. That's bull,' Kelly continued. 'There was a whole decade, if I am being completely honest, a decade, where it was like the elephant in the room. It was the thing that would constantly be on my shoulder'

Kelly began performing with Beyoncé in 1990 at the tender age of just 9, in the Houston-based group Girl’s Tyme. 

The group, along with Michelle Williams, became Destiny’s Child, and shot to the top of the charts, and international super-stardom, in the late 1990s and 2000s with such hits as Say My Name, Bootylicious and Survivor. 

Destiny’s Child disbanded in 2006, however reunited in 2018 for Beyoncé’s headline performance at Coachella.
