MasterChef’s Reece Hignell reveals he had a ‘spit bucket’ on the show so he didn’t have to stray from his ‘plant-based’ diet when tasting his dishes
He was eliminated from MasterChef on Sunday, and now Reece Hignell is dishing the dirt on some of the show’s behind-the-scenes secrets.
In an interview with Now to Love on Monday, the 30-year-old chef revealed he had a ‘spit bucket’ on hand for when he had to cook non-vegan dishes.
Reece is a vegan, and he confessed having to cook with meat during the competition was ‘so hard’, especially when he had to taste his dishes.

‘I like to only eat plant-based, but I do that for a health reason, but it was definitely hard to try and stick with that on the show because you obviously have to try everything that you’re making with pressure tests and that, and none of them were vegan,’ he explained.
He added: ‘The show was actually really lovely to me – they gave me a spit bucket! They were also really kind not to put that on TV. I didn’t always have to eat it if you know what I’m saying.’
With the show now getting down to the pointy end of the competition, viewers were left devastated by Reece’s elimination on Sunday, after making it into the top five.

The fan favourite admitted returning to the show for Back to Win was ‘so much harder’ than when he first appeared on the series back in 2018.
‘It’s just not comparable I think. This season was so much harder…’ he confessed.
‘I made a joke to the judges and I said, “I reckon the amount of effort just to get to the top five in this season I would’ve easily won season 10!”

‘It’s so hard competing against these people but I had the most incredible time and I enjoyed every moment of it.’
Reece said he had been inundated with kind messages from fans following his elimination.
