Today host Karl Stefanovic walks set over Allison Langdon’s ‘hurtful’ tweet

Today host Karl Stefanovic WALKS OFF set on live TV after Allison Langdon described him as ‘lazy’ in a hurtful tweet – before the truth is revealed

Karl Stefanovic got a taste of his own medicine on Friday when he discovered a colleague had ‘bagged him out’ behind his back.

The Today show host, 45, walked off set during a live broadcast after being told his co-anchor Allison Langdon had posted a hurtful tweet about him – or so it seemed.

Karl surprised viewers by calling out Allison, 41, for supposedly making disparaging remarks about him and sports reporter Alex Cullen on Twitter.

Following Alex’s sports update, Karl said: ‘I don’t think they’d be alone in bagging colleagues out privately, obviously.’

‘Yeah, it happens,’ a solemn-looking Alex replied.

Karl continued: ‘It does happen, and it’s not very nice. I’ve actually managed to intercept a tweet Ally sent Tim [Davies, Today’s weather presenter], and this is what it says here.’

He then read aloud the Twitter post, which also appeared on screen.

‘Hey Tim, I think Alex and Karl are LAZY and letting the team down. I’m so sick of carrying them every morning,’ it read.

‘So that’s Allison Langdon to Tim. That’s good, isn’t it?’ Karl said, bitterly.

Playing along with the joke, Alex added: ‘That hurts. That hurts me right in the bread basket.’

Realising what was going on, Allison smiled wryly and said: ‘Look, I stand by it!’

Karl then stood up and began to walk off set in protest, but stopped to confer with Alex, who was also pretending to have hurt feelings.

They eventually digressed to talking about the NRL, and Allison swiftly moved on to a weather segment with Tim.

Karl’s walk-off was simply a joke, however, and a cursory glance at Allison’s verified Twitter account shows that she hasn’t tweeted since May 29.

There are several websites that allow users to generate ‘fake tweets’, which appears to be what the Today show producers did in this case.

While the segment was tongue in cheek, Karl knows all too well the consequences of ‘bagging colleagues out privately’.

In March 2018, Karl and his brother Peter Stefanovic were overheard by an Uber driver having a ‘b**chy’ conversation about Georgie Gardner, his co-host on the Today show at the time, and other Channel Nine staffers.

A transcript of the conversation was later published in New Idea, which is owned by Nine’s main commercial rival, Seven West Media.

After the magazine hit newsstands, Georgie described Karl as ‘pathetic’ live on Today – although she was ostensibly talking about his phobia of dachshunds.
