‘For the first time in history’: The Voice contestants left stunned as a surprise twist is announced for the much-anticipated showdown round

The Voice contestants were left stunned after an unexpected twist for the much-anticipated showdown round was announced on Tuesday.   

Following the final play-off round, co-hosts Darren McMullen and Renee Bargh revealed the artists were being given the power to choose their own song to perform next week. 

Darren told the singers: ‘Next week, for the first time in Voice history I might add, artists, we are handing the power over to you guys.’

‘You must prove to your Coach that you have what it takes to survive in the music industry,’ Renee added. 

‘You’ll choose your own song and help craft what will be your most important performance yet.’ 

The artists appeared surprised at the announcement in particular Chris Sebastian, the younger brother of judge Guy Sebastian.

Renee explained that only two artists from each team will progress through to the semi-final round ahead of upcoming grand finals.

After weeks of being pushed out of their comfort zone, next week’s round will see the artists in control of their performance and showcase their strengths.

The announcement comes after Daily Mail Australia reported that artists allegedly have ‘little to no access’ to their mentors when the cameras aren’t rolling earlier this week.

‘We had little to no access to the judges,’ the contestant claimed. ‘Everything was screened and it was up to the producers [to pass it on].’ 

The recently-ousted singer further alleged that the contestants were not given any direct telephone numbers or email addresses for their mentors.

The coaches on The Voice Australia this year are Boy George, Kelly Rowland, Delta Goodrem and Guy Sebastian.
