Uber launches on-demand grocery delivery in Latin America and Canada, with a US roll out expected end of July

  • Uber has rolled out an on-demand grocery service in Latin America and Canada
  • The feature lets users select grocery items at major stores in their area
  • A courier then collects the order and a driver will deliver to the customer
  • Dallas and Miami will be the first US cities to receive the option later this month

First it was ridesharing, then restaurants and now Uber is breaking into the grocery business.

The firm rolled out the new delivery service in its flagship app and UberEats for users in select Latin American and Canadian cities.

The new feature allows purchases at major stores including Walmart, Metro and Lider and is expected to be available in the US states Dallas and Miami by the end of the month.

In both apps there is grocery tab that includes partnering stores where users can select desired products – all of which will be collected and picked up by a driver to be delivered to your doorstep.

Uber stepped out into the world in 2009, changing the way we travel by allowing users to hail a ride with a push of a button.

Then in 2014, the firm added UberEats that brought food to homes in a matter in minutes.

And now it has made its way into grocery delivery with a new feature that is being tested in Campinas, Goiania, Belo Horizonte, Brasilia, Curitiba, Porto Alegre, Salvador, Concepción, La Serena, Santiago, Valparaiso, Bogota, Lima, Florianópolis, Recife, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Montreal and Toronto.

The new feature is in partnership with Cornershop, which is a delivery startup based in Santiago, Chile.

The announcement follows the startup’s 2019 agreement with Uber to acquire a stake in the company.

Raj Beri, Uber’s Global Head of Grocery, said: ‘Today’s product integration marks an important step in our partnership with the team at Cornershop to bring grocery delivery to millions of consumers on the Uber platform.’

‘Uber started on the premise that people should be able to more easily get to the places they need to go, and to people they care about.

‘This has since evolved to connecting people to food from their favorite local restaurants, and we are thrilled to bring our product expertise to the world of grocery alongside the Cornershop team.’

For those cities with the new feature, a grocery option will appear in both the Uber and UberEats app that lists a range of stores where items can be purchased.

Users choose the grocery store, select the desired items and a Cornershop shoppers and drivers will gather the order and deliver.

A launch in the US is set for the end of July, with Dallas and Miami receiving the feature first.

Uber’s grocery delivery push comes at a time when its core ride-hailing business is under pressure around the globe with coronavirus lockdown orders keeping many passengers at home.

At the same time, Uber’s restaurant delivery business Eats has seen growing demand during the pandemic, with second-quarter food delivery orders up more than 100 percent.
