A one-year-old boy who was found dead in a hot tub in the back garden of a family home has been named as an inquest into his death hears the cause of the tragedy is still unknown.

The youngster, identified as Eddie Murphy-Boxall by his mother Siobhan Murphy, was found dead in a hot-tub in the back garden of his family’s seaside home last month.

Senior Coroner Karen Henderson today said the autopsy, which was carried out by Dr Andreas Marnerides (corr) at Worthing Hospital in West Sussex, was still to identify the cause of young Eddie’s death.

Eddie’s body was found unresponsive in a hot-tub at the £500,000 family home in Central Avenue, Worthing, West Sussex on June 24, before being rushed to Worthing Hospital where he was confirmed dead.

It was unclear how long the youngster had been in the tub when paramedics arrived at the seaside location after being flown in on air ambulances.

A neighbour, who asked not to be named, said: ‘There were a lot of emergency services at the scene – ambulances, the helicopter, police cars, the lot. From what I have been told it sounds like a terrible tragedy has happened.

‘I was told by another neighbour that a little boy had been found dead in a hot tub in the garden. Whether the lid was on it or how he got into there, I don’t know. You have got to feel desperately sorry for his family,’ the man added.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said: ‘We were called to a property in Central Avenue, Worthing, at 12.57pm following concerns for the welfare of a one-year-old boy.

‘The boy was taken to hospital by ambulance staff where he sadly died. Full circumstances surrounding the death are being investigated and the matter has been passed to the Coroner’s Officer.’

Dr Henderson adjourned the opening inquest in Crawley, West Sussex, for a full hearing to be held on a date yet to be fixed.
