Londoners come out top of the lockdown savers with 38% saying they have managed to lay more cash aside

31 per cent of people nationwide said they had managed to save more during lockdown with this rising to 38 per cent in London

Londoners have saved more than most during lockdown, research reveals.

More than a quarter of Britons stopped or cut back on saving in the pandemic, according to the survey by pension firm Aegon. 

It found 58 per cent of people in the South West had to scale back. 

Yet 31 per centof people nationwide managed to save more, with this rising to 38 per centin London.

Steven Cameron, pensions director at Aegon, says: ‘There is a stark divide between those who have remained in employment and increased savings and those who have had to cut back or stop savings or increase borrowing. 

‘If this divide continues for any length of time, it will have a big impact on the future financial security of different groups.’
