Frog legs it 5,000 miles to an Asda in Wales after stowing away in crates of bananas from Colombia

  • A tree frog managed to travel 5,000 miles from South America to South Wales
  • The frog hid in a packet of bananas before being found in an Asda in Llanelli
  • It has been named Asda after the supermarket it was found in by the store staff
  • The frog is believed to be a banana tree species originating from Colombia

It’s a long hop from South America to South Wales, but one frog has made the 5,000-mile journey – thanks to a bunch of bananas.

The tree frog travelled in a consignment of the fruit which was sent from Colombia to Britain.

His final destination was an Asda supermarket in Llanelli, where he was spotted by surprised staff last week.

Experts believe he survived the journey to a cooler climate without food or drink by slowing down his metabolism, which amphibians are able to do.

The thumb-sized frog, now named Asda, has been transferred to specialist animal centre Silent World To You in Haverfordwest, where he will live in a humid environment and dine on crickets.

Staff at the centre believe he is a banana tree frog, although they said it can be difficult to identify frog species.

Ginny Spenceley from the centre said: ‘He’s doing really well and, funnily enough, got very comfortable in a banana skin as we helped settle him into his new surroundings.’

The RSPCA praised the supermarket for taking care of the frog before he went to the animal centre.

An Asda spokesman said: ‘We hope he enjoys his “hoppy” new home.
