Janelle Monae slams misogyny in music during tweetstorm: ‘I only ever wanna hear women rapping’

Janelle Monae put the music industry on blast on Friday, during an epic Twitter rant against misogyny.

The Hidden Figures actress, 34, began her tirade by writing that ‘the amount of misogyny from most of men in rap and music is infuriating.’

‘I really only ever wanna hear women rapping,’ said the Electric Lady singer.  

‘Women (black women inparticular) have been betrayed by the majority of men for far too long . The systems that enable Patriarchy and abusers of power are burning . Either bring gasoline or burn with them . [sic]’

‘Y’all can’t wait to call women every b***h , hoe , discuss violent acts against women, etc for clout in rap, rock, and through out music history. Misogny has NEVER been okay yet it has become normalized. Women didn’t create misogny, y’all did. SO YOU DO THE WORK to ABOLISH IT.’

She then called out institutionalized misogyny, and even appeared to make reference to the current US President.  

‘Misogyny in entertainment, boardrooms, the WH, households, corporate spaces, army, church, let’s us all know ya’ll do not care about women on a human to human level and you never have. If you did it would have been ABOLISHED centuries ago. You had time,’ wrote Monae.

‘The way many RELIGIONS are used to oppress women and prepetuate misogynistic ideals to REMAIN IN POWER must be discussed WAY MORE and ABOLISHED .’

‘Yes white people need to do the work to dismantle systemic racism, white supremacy, etc. And yes men (& those who benefit from the systems) need 2 do the work 2 dismantle patriarchy, sexism & misogyny. You must call in those w/ toxic behaviors even if it’s YOU. EVERY DAY.’

‘You can love someone and STILL hold them accountable. Love is not exempt of accountability. They can go hand and hand.’

‘We are in the reckoning.’

‘Some folks won’t retweet anything about sexism and mysogyny and abuse against women for fear they may be called out. Reformation is possible tho. If you do the work now you don’t have to live in fear. Free yourself.’

‘A lot of my musical heroes and peers’ Work are problematic in many ways . And I just might be a problematic hero to someone.’

‘Crazy thing is me and my girls still be dancing to this shit. It’s such a mind f**k . How did we get here?!’

‘The only gas lighting I accept is the gas we lighting to burn down white supremacy . The only gas lighting I accept is the gas we lighting to burn down sexism . The only gas lighting I accept is the gas we lighting to burn down homophobia,’ the Q.U.E.E.N. artist concluded.

 Monae had earlier turned her attention to racism, and declared she’s ‘not settling for lip service’ from others trying to join the Black Lives Matter movement in an intense drama actress roundtable for The Hollywood Reporter last month. 

Speaking about the outrage over George Floyd’s slaying at the hands of police, Monae said she had high expectations for her ‘allies’.

‘One of the things that I learned about me is that I’m not settling for those who say that they’re allies. I’m not settling for lip service,’ said the Homecoming actress.

‘If you want to show me that you’re an ally, it’s going to have to be rooted in acts of service.’

‘I’m asking of my white friends or those who consider themselves supporters of me and us during this time to have those conversations around white supremacy and around why your ancestors started chattel slavery.’

‘Have those conversations around how you dismantle systemic racism.’

Turning to other solutions, Monae added, ‘I’m team “Defund the police” — that’s very clear for me — and I want to put that money into our education and into our health care systems.’
