Delta Goodrem shares her harrowing cancer battle

Delta Goodrem reflects on her harrowing cancer battle as she launches a foundation to support the doctors who saved her life

At just 18 years old, Delta Goodrem was faced with the toughest battle of her life when she was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

And on Monday, she reunited with one of the doctors who helped save her life as she announced her new charity for cancer research.

The singer, now 35, said on the Today show that starting the Delta Goodrem Foundation Fellowship in Cellular Therapy was an ‘incredible opportunity’ to give back to the medical community.

‘Nobody gives you a road map in that moment,’ said Delta, who was joined on the program by Associate Professor John Moore, her doctor during her cancer battle.

‘It changed my trajectory but that was a part of my story and now we have this incredible opportunity,’ she added.

The Delta Goodrem Foundation Fellowship in Cellular Therapy will help fund cancer research at Sydney’s St Vincent’s Hospital.

Delta hopes that by sharing her experience she will be a ‘pillar of strength’ for other young people battling cancer.

‘It’s a journey that many, many Australians and humans go through,’ she said.

‘Coming through that and hopefully standing as a pillar of hope and strength and as a survivor, I’m really proud for moments like this week which has been a full circle moment.’

This isn’t the first time Delta has given back since her recovery.

The Voice coach  is also the patron of The Kinghorn Cancer Centre and an ambassador for the hospital’s haematology ward.

Meanwhile, Dr Moore, praised the musician for her desire to help others.

‘I think its a credit to her as a person that she can come full circle, as she says, and come back and help other patients with the same condition,’ he said.
