Today Extra host David Campbell reveals his fears his 10-year-old son will grow taller than him

Today Extra host David Campbell reveals his fears his 10-year-old son will grow taller than him… while admitting he likes to share clothes with his father Jimmy Barnes

David Campbell has always looked forward to the day his son would be tall enough to look him directly in the eye.

But the Today Extra host, 46, fears that day will come a little too early for his liking, after his 10 year-old son Leo had a huge growth spurt while the family were in lockdown.

David penned a reflection on his eldest child growing up in Stellar Magazine on Saturday, hilariously describing his son as a ‘seemingly enormous man-child’.

‘I loved growing up and being able to borrow a cool leather jacket from his wardrobe’: On Saturday, Extra host David Campbell (pictured left) admitted he liked to share clothes with his father Jimmy Barnes (pictured right), while penning an article about his son Leo growing up

He came to the realisation earlier this month that Leo could ‘do the whole look-me-in-the-eye thing in the next year or two’ while they were shopping for shoes, with his son already matching his wife Lisa’s shoe size.

David feared his son would be raiding his father’s wardrobe on the first day of high school, while he hadn’t done so with Jimmy until he was well into his teen years.

‘I loved growing up and being able to borrow (or steal) a cool leather jacket from the back of his [Jimmy’s] wardrobe,’ David said.

He added: ‘I dreamt of the day my son would raid my closet to go out with his mates. Or to go on his first date. Maybe borrow my jacket for his first day of university.

‘He isn’t supposed to be lofty enough to be able to wear my Sunday best to his first day of high school. I can’t find where I put the contract, but I’m pretty sure this isn’t what I signed up for,’ David said.

David went on to reveal he was proud his son would be ‘chosen first for basketball’.

David and his wife Lisa also share two other children, five-year-old twins Billy and Betty.

In an interview with parenting website The Father Hood last year, David said he aspired to be a role model for his three children.

‘When I became a parent myself, I realised that I needed to be mirroring what I want my kids to be,’ he explained.

‘You obviously want your kids to be Version 2.0 of you. But if the version that you’re putting out there is rubbish, well, then they’re just going to lap you in their teens.’
