HOW LONG DOES LABOUR TAKE?

For first time mothers, labour usually takes around eight hours, according to the NHS. However, the time can vary.

Doctors say it is unlikely to take any longer than 18 hours, and claim second-time mothers can expect to go through the process quicker because they have been through the process before.

Labour is split into three stages. The first part involves contractions to dilate the cervix to make room for the baby’s head to pass into the vagina.

The second part of labour lasts from when the cervix is fully dilated until the baby passes through the vaginal canal and is born.

The NHS states the second part is ‘hard work’ and that pushing can last up to three hours for first time mothers.

The third stage of labour doesn’t happen until a baby is born and the placenta is pushed out. This usually takes between 10 and 60 minutes.

‘Sending my love to all the mommas to be and those trying – also my prayers and love goes to the infertility warriors❤️. Forever grateful for our incredible midwife Ellie.’

In the YouTube video, Iskra admitted that she had no idea how painful contractions are and they were ‘never ending’ after she endured them for 12 hours.

Talking about having her placenta pulled out, she said: ‘So I’m holding the baby, and got a towel between my legs because obviously there was blood everywhere like a murder scene. There were marks of blood on the wall.

‘Then I go and lay in the bed and then she pulls out the placenta – which is the best feeling in the world. No one told me that, it was like a lovely relief…’

Detailing her birth, the model added that she was unable to sleep, talk or eat during labour and her body ‘swelled up’.

Iskra revealed that when her waters broke it was so violent it went in Philip’s eyes and she quickly rushed to her birthing pool. Although her midwife said the water wasn’t warm enough to which her family had to quickly pour in hot water from pans.

Although things soon took a scary turn when her midwife revealed that the baby was unable to push past a lip on her cervix with the medical professional having to manually held the newborn out.

Iskra explained that the baby’s head then came out but its neck was stuck between her cervix, resulting in her quickly getting out the birthing pool and squatting so her midwife could safely deliver the baby.

Yet the drama was far from over as the baby wasn’t breathing for a few seconds and needed emergency oxygen.

Iskra admitted that it was ‘really scary’ although added: ‘It all happened so quickly so it wasn’t traumatising in a way, she [the midwife] just dealt with it.’

Joking about her birth, the star added that she was so loud during delivery that her next door neighbour’s children asked what was going on.

Iskra added: ‘I was asked afterwards: “Would you do this again?”, I said: “No way!” Two days later I was asked: “Iskra, would you do this again.” I said: “Absolutely.”

‘There’s something in nature that protects you from remembering the vividness of pain.’
