Lady Colin Campbell brands Phillip Schofield ‘ignorant’ as he criticises her Meghan and Harry book

Lady Colin Campbell locked horns with Phillip Schofield as he criticised her upcoming book about Meghan Markle and Prince Harry.

In an awkward interview on Tuesday’s This Morning, the author, 70, branded the host, 58, ‘ignorant’ as he questioned the credibility of her new ‘gossip’ tell-all.

The Celebs Go Dating star also appeared to make a thinly-veiled dig at the presenter for ‘not having any respect for the truth’, which seemingly caused him to refer to his recent gay revelation as he hit back: ‘I think you’ll find I’ve done that myself!’

Meghan and Harry: The Real Story, which is set for release on Thursday and remains ‘unverified’ by the Royal Family, details Lady Colin’s perspective of their time in the spotlight.

Sharing his thoughts, Dancing On Ice’s Phillip labelled the socialite’s book ‘tawdry and undignified’, explaining: ‘I’d be surprised any of the royals would want to get involved with more gossip after your Princess Diana book.’

The controversial aristocrat slammed the TV veteran as she defended her latest project: ‘It’s history in the making. That shows how ignorant you are if I may point out.

‘My Diana biography was named the most believable by People Magazine and had it not been for that biography, Diana would have thrown Prince Charles to the wolves.’

Lady Colin and Phillip’s disagreement escalated when he called her a ‘gossip’, to which she responded: ‘Everyone is a gossip.

‘If you had any respect for the truth you would be able to appreciate that people who actually stand up and get counted and go against the tide understand the truth.’

Appearing to reference himself coming out as gay in February, the TV star said: ‘I think you’ll find I’ve done that myself!’

The award-winning wordsmith continued to stand by her book, stating: ‘You can’t have mental health if you can’t tell the truth.

‘This seems to be a debate about whether people should stand up and be honest or whether people should slink in the shadows and pretend. You can’t have mental health if you can’t tell the truth.’

‘I don’t understand’, a confused Holly Willoughby admitted, before the interviewee said: ‘You should understand.’

Lady Colin also shut down Diana’s former butler Paul Burrell, who claimed she ‘doesn’t know enough to write a book’.

The fiery star said: ‘I don’t dignify anything Paul Burrell says. He’s a disloyal servant and I don’t deal with servants.

‘I do not associate with any member of any royal family publicly unless I am a lady in waiting. Otherwise my relationships are private.

If you knew anything about the aristocracy, which you don’t, I do not leak like a sieve like Meghan and Harry.’

Lady Colin recently claimed Meghan was given ‘greater privileges’ than any other royal fiancée, and insisted the Queen’s family had never ’embraced’ anyone in the same way before.

She said the Royal Family went ‘out of their way to welcome’ the former actress.

Lady Colin, who penned the 1992 bestseller Diana in Private: The Princess Nobody, added that The Firm ’embraced’ Meghan in a way that ‘nobody has ever been before’.

Speaking to the Daily Star Online, she said: ‘The Royal Family went out of their way to embrace [Meghan] in a way that they have never gone out of their way to embrace anybody else.

‘Meghan was the only fiancée that was ever asked to Windsor before the wedding, and she was the only newlywed who was invited by the Queen to accompany her on a daily engagement.

‘She is the only newlywed who was actually invited to stand with the Queen at Buckingham Palace, and Meghan was given greater privileges and embraced in a way that nobody has ever been before.’

The writer has given a number of interviews about the couple in recent weeks, including one with The Sunday Times in which she said Meghan has ‘squandered’ the ‘most wonderful opportunity’ by leaving the royal family.
