Grimes and Elon had to officially change the baby’s name from X Æ A-12 to X AE A-XII to comply with California law.
But birth names in California must only contain letters from the English alphabet, with no numbers or special characters, TMZ have reported.
The parents have therefore had to change the character Æ, which is used in Norwegian and Danish and is often pronounced ‘Ash’, to ‘AE’ in their son’s name.

The final part of his unusual name, A-12, named after a 1960s spy plane, has been changed to Roman numerals to comply with state law.
It comes after Grimes told Bloomberg her nickname for baby X Æ A-12 is ‘Little X’.

But Musk disagreed, as he said it was ‘Ex Ash Archangel Twelve’ on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast.
In a two hour long chat, the billionaire broke down the name of his newborn before doubling down on his pledge to sell his possessions, telling Rogan he will rent a home. He said: ‘What’s the worst that can happen?’
Musk told Rogan: ‘First of all, my partner is the one that, actually, mostly, came up with the name. Yeah, she’s great at names.
When asked to explain the choice Musk replied: ‘I mean it’s just X, the letter X. And then, the Æ is, like, pronounced ‘Ash’.

Their first child, Nevada Alexander Musk, died of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) when he was just 10 weeks old.
The couple later had five sons through IVF – twins Griffin and Xavier, who were born in 2004, followed by triplets Kai, Saxon and Damian in 2006.
